Pulled the old ECU out of the Cheep and found white crusty stuff bubbling out of the corner of it.
Not only that, but the otherwise flush back panel is pushed out on one corner. I’m gonna hazard a guess and say that some capacitor or something exploded.
Unfortunately one of the torx bolts holding it onto the bracket stripped the moment I touched it so I can’t investigate further. I just ordered a whole new bracket , since this one is so cronchy anyways.

Cronchy is lightweight so its better /s

Looks like fungus, I’d squirt some horticultural oil on it and leave it in the sun. Should green right up.

Looks like water got inside and corroded the aluminum, splitting it apart. I had something similar happen in an aluminum-houses cruise control module one time where it got water between the housing and steel bracket and ended up breaking the housing from the corrosion and jamming the motor/gears.
If this ECU is located in the passenger compartment, I’d be looking into where the water is coming from that caused the rust, etc.

The ECU is located in the engine compartment, right under the cowl. My guess is the drain clogged with pine needles or something while it was sitting before I bought it and th e water found another way out.

As long as it’s clear now, that seems like a probable cause that isn’t likely to repeat. I’d still keep an eye on it after a good rain or wash though

My neighbor’s Camry had a security system and the controller got flooded. Between 20 years of salt from being on the floor and the water, it went wacko. I pulled it out of its case and it was all green and slimy.
I told here to clean it with a toothbrush and water and then run it in the dishwasher. Finally dry it an an open oven at low. She did and it worked. You might try it.
That board probably has something bridging a pin or trace. The stuff is basically water tight. In fact we used to run our circuit boards through a dishwasher after wave soldering.
So you might as well try cleaning it.

Did it run?

You’re making me think of Tracy:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
You probably don’t want that, but I guess circuit boards generally aren’t greasy.

The ECU was trashed, so no it didn't.

I’d hope he staged this photo and didn’t have dishes in there when he tried it. That being said I’ve read his articles and am certain he tossed it in there with things he eats off of.

The linked article contains pictures, and worse, descriptions of his well oiled dishes. And IIRC he actually had to get the dishwasher replaced because it was still greasing up things on subsequent loads.

Yep, that sounds about right. I think he’d be really cool to meet and have a beer with, but I’m worried if I shook his hand I’d need to bathe in Fast Orange.
